Just when you think you’ve seen every dance move known to woman (or man), along comes Silvia Gribaudiwith the comedy bingo wing. We may be early in the Resolution! run but the sight of Gribaudi wobbling herfleshy bicep right on the beat is already locked in as a personal highlight.Morphing from hem-fiddling wallflower to stage-owning siren, Gribaudi’s solo A corpo libero (free style) was
a joy from start of finish. Expressing more with a shrug or a roll of the eyes than most manage with full-onlimb-flinging, Gribaudi ran on the spot to Iggy Pop’s The Passenger, chased a capricious spotlight andturned belly wobbling and breast jiggling into uplifting poetry. She owned the stage: A corpo libero was a
speeded up DIY version of How To Look Good Naked, happily minus Gok Wan yelling ‘Go Girlfriend!’. Thissister is doin’ it for herself.

It’s Friday night, the working week has drawn to a close and what better way to welcome the weekend andits various excesses than through Silvia Gribaudi’s satirical solo of “the female condition,” A corpo libero(free style)? Framed by a spotlight, Gribaudi pulls, tugs and wrenches at her decorative print lycra dress,
adjusting and readjusting the garment in dissatisfaction. Sidelights illuminate a pathway across the centrestage, triggering a ridiculous and hysterical convulsion to Iggy Pop’s The Passenger – a physical homage,perhaps, to the gyrating sexagenarian himself. Gribaudi depicts a parodical Friday night disco, with a
knowing wink towards female vanity. Just when it seemed that she had sated the audiences thirst forhumour, she strips to reveal a (not so itsy-bitsy) red bikini and proceeds to shake her limbs, buttocks, thighs(and breasts!) in perfect synch to the backing track. Fiona Campbell

I think the evening started as it is meant to continue. Silvia’s fantastic comic entrance is a classic.Think Buster Keaton, think Harold Lloyd, think silent movies and the 1920’s burlesque, then you will be somewhere on the same thoughts as myself. Silvia appears on stage with a single spot light on her. Shy and modest she fumbles with her dress and after some shuffling she mumbles under her breath, “Who sold this
dress to me…. It must be an extra small….and it even has a spot on it… but you cannot see it from a distance…” This is completely hysterical, she has the audience and she has me. With her outlandish body movements in this brightly coloured chequered dress her physique is of a pure Italian shapely woman from the south.
Utilising the one light to the max, her historic one women show is classic in every sense. Using the ‘running’ effect, the ‘hand’ effect and shear comic timing, Silvia’s stage presence is unquestionable. Later when she takes off her dress for it to become a head scarf, she proudly reveals a green bikini. Then
here lies the second part. Isolating parts of the body, you would never imagine and giving them a good shake. I went away from this performance, also proud to have wet washing arms, (Bingo wings) many of us embarked on ‘Doing the Gribaudi’.

Un corpo così non lo vedrete (quasi) mai in uno spot televisivo, sulle pagine patinate di una rivista.
Una donna così non rientra nei canoni tradizionalmente imposti della bellezza. Eppure è quanto di
più innaturale si possa immaginare: la pelle morbida, senza spigoli ossuti; l’imperfezione che
diventa normalità, la propria fisicità come superficie di un mondo interiore. “A corpo libero” di
Silvia Gribaudi è uno spettacolo dissacrante contro i canoni della bellezza classica che
caratterizzano il mondo della danza di oggi. Ma è anche il grido di rivolta di una donna che cerca la
libertà ed è costretta a fare i conti con i suoi limiti e la sua inadeguatezza.

Elle est libre Silvia Gribaudi, libre de jouer les poseuses en robes bariolée, libre de taper un
sprint sur Iggy Pop, ou de remuer sa graisse sur un air d’opéra. C’est l’Italie fellinienne qui
est convoquée dans un solo clownesque qui ne laisse aucun répit. Un époustouflant tour de
femme en forme de pied de nez à la gent masculine et aux bonnes manières. Pas étonnant que
ces quinze minutes de bravoure féminine(-niste) aient remporté moult prix en Italie.

Sharon Fridman (Hadera, Israel, 1980) y la turinesa Silvia Gribaudi se conocen experta y
mutuamente; diríase que desde 2009 hubo entre ellos un conveniente flechazo estético que se ha
vuelto productivo. Han trabajado juntos en varias ocasiones a la vez que emprenden proyectos más
comprometidos como este estreno de anoche. En Madrid, Silvia, a la que llamé en su momento
“artista singular que cultiva el feísmo y un humor ácido” se unió a Fridman en un paso a dos
titulado In to it presentado al público como parte de una obra mayor en proceso. En esa ocasión
usaron el Vocalise de Rachmaninov, y el gran debate escénico e irónico culminaba un ritual íntimo.
Debo reafirmarme en que, “si se cree en la belleza interior, ésa es la que triunfa”. Por esta razón
Fridman ha escogido bien a su compañera de viaje, si bien es un viaje a ninguna parte. En ella su
impudor es la base de su sardónico comportamiento (pasa de madre amantísima a mantis religiosa)
y él se regodea en su perfil de mártir barroco. El resultado es una obra bellísima y compacta.
“Silvia Gribaudi, con la coreografia “A corpo libero”, è stata proclamata
vincitrice del premio Giovane Danza D’autore 2009. La scelta della giuria è
totalmente condivisibile: il grande umorismo, la profonda espressività,
l’originalità delle scelte, hanno dato origine ad una performance davvero
eccezionale, unica. Una donna comune, lontana da qualsiasi processo di
idealizzazione, lotta contro la sua continua inadeguatezza. E’ un confronto tra
l’individuo e la società: una lotta che si combatte senza sosta, a colpi di abiti,
trucco, successo, apparenza. La vita è rappresentata, in effetti, come una gara,
una competizione in cui è necessario distinguersi, spingere, farsi spazio. “A
corpo libero” è dominato soprattutto da una forte autoironia, che si esplica in
uno spettacolo esilarante e multiforme, bellissimo anche per i suoi contrasti
(le musiche comprendono Giuseppe Verdi e Iggy Pop).”

Motivazioni della giuria internazionale:
Dopo lunghe e appassionanti discussioni, che hanno evidenziato la profonda differenza dei lavori presentati e di conseguenza la difficoltà di valutarli e compararli, la giuria ha espresso il suo parere a partire dalle seguenti considerazioni. Il premio è rivolto a giovani coreografi e pertanto vanno tenuti presenti da un lato il percorso formativo e artistico del concorrente e le sue doti performative, dall’ altro la sua capacità di confezionare un lavoro finito sulla base di un progetto chiaro, e il talento nel dominare gli aspetti tecnici dell’allestimento.
Per queste ragioni la giuria ha deciso di attribuire il premio GdA 2009 a “A corpo libero” di Silvia Gribaudi.

International jury citation
Long and intense discussions have highlighted the big difference characterising the various works presented and the consequent difficulty in judging them. The judges have based their decision on the following principles.
This is a prize for young choreographers and should be assigned on the grounds of both their artistic development and their ability to deliver a completed work on the basis of a clear project as well as to master the technical aspects of the production.
On the above grounds the jury has decided to give the GDA 2009 prize to “A Corpo Libero” by Silvia Gribaudi.
